LUSAKA (ILO News) - The Social Protection Week under the theme “Achieving Prosperity for All” will also feature the high-level launch of the Social Cash Transfer 2010-2015 impact evaluation and the commemoration of the International Day of the Family (IDF).
The Social Protection Week comprises a series of sessions to share information and engage citizens in public debate on the state of Social Protection in Zambia.
Other sessions will cover themes such as; the establishment of a comprehensive and integrated social protection system; the link between agriculture and social protection; the role of civil society in the delivery of social protection; the challenges of extension of social security to the informal economy; the establishment of Social Health Insurance; synergies between social protection on one hand and HIV prevention and treatment and nutrition on the other will equally be presented and discussed.
Social Protection in Zambia
While there has been undeniable momentum for social protection in Zambia, this momentum has not received the broad attention it deserves. Social Protection concerns all segments of society and the timeliness of bringing together a broad range of stakeholders for a discussion on the role of social protection in the Zambian society is now commonly acknowledged.
Despite remarkable progress in the sector, significant challenges remain, in particular in regards to the creation of the necessary institutional capacity and financial space to establish governments system to deliver social protection throughout the life cycle.
It is in light of this, the Government of Zambia, through the Ministry of Community Development and Social Welfare and the Ministry of Labour and Social Security with support from the ILO and other partners has convened the 2016 Social Protection Week.
