Young Union Activists Meet in Astrakhan
An international seminar for young labour union activists from Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Russia, co-organised by the Federation of Independent Trade Unions of Russia (FITUR) and the International Labour Organisation, ended on 10 November in Astrakhan.

Presentations were made by Sergeyus Glovackas, Senior Specialist in Workers' Activities at the ILO Office in Moscow, Nikolay Gladkov, FITUR Secretary, Alexander Shershukov, FITUR Secretary and editor-in-chief of Solidarity paper of Russian unions, and Anna Salnikova, coordinator of programmes and campaigns at the Pan- European Regional Council of the International Trade Union Confederation.
The seminar's main focus was on the protection of union rights -- how it is implemented internationally, some of its specific features in Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Russia, and the role young activists can play in making it work even better.
The final day was practice-focused. First, FITUR Secretary Alexander Shershukov made a presentation featuring various public campaigns for union rights, and then the participants broke into small groups to brainstorm specific ways for young people to contribute to unions' efforts to protect worker rights, e.g. by using social media and creating union-focused mobile applications, reviewing changes in labour legislation, sharing the content of collective bargaining agreements, and others.
In conclusion, the event organisers introduced a number of topics to be addressed by future meetings; these cover the ILO's key strategic objectives and include employment, decent work, regulated labour migration, international legal provisions, and others.
