Yerevan hosts first national conference on social partnership

Armenia should develop small and medium-sized businesses, draft mechanisms to free its economy from oligopoly and guarantee fair market competition, Artur Bagdasaryan, the republic’s National Security Council Secretary, said in his opening remarks to the first national conference on social partnership.
“Cooperation among the government, entrepreneurs and trade unionins is extremely important for translating these ideas into reality,” he said. “Social partnership is consonant with Armenia’s goals and national security strategy that is a backbone of ensuring security and stable development of the country, society and personality and of maintaining Armenia’s identity.”
The chairman of the Republican Union of Employers of Armenia, Arsen Ghazaryan, expressed the hope that the conference will draw the guidelines for developing social partnership among the government, employers and trade unions.
Ghazaryan recalled that in 2009 the government, the Confederation of Trade Unions of Armenia and the Republican Union of Employers of Armenia signed a collective agreement laying the legal groundwork for social partnership.
The conference was organized by the Republican Union of Employers of Armenia with the assistance of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation, the Dutch Employers’ Cooperation Programme, the Cyprus Employers and Industrialists Federation, the International Labor Organization and ArmenTel, Armenia’s telecommunications company.
