World Social Forum: Decent Job Creation as a Way of Tackling the Crisis

Dakar, 28 february 2011 (ACTRAV INFO)- “Pro-employment Growth and Worker Participation” was the theme of a panel discussion at the ILO Dakar Office. Taking part were several trade union organizations, the ILO Bureau for Workers’ Activities (ACTRAV) and the Resident Representative of the International Monetary Fund in Dakar, Valeria Ficheria.

The Director of the ILO Dakar Office, François Murangira, expressed the hope that the IMF will take account “of social dialogue and the increasingly important role of civil society actors, including trade unions”.

Mody Guiro, Director of the African region of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC-Africa), said the creation of decent jobs is a means of tackling the crisis on the continent. “The only way of rolling back the crisis is to create decent work,” he insisted.

On behalf of the IMF, Valeria Ficheria promised that it will strengthen its cooperation with the ILO on the creation of decent work.

The panel discussion was a side event of the World Social Forum (7-11 February 2011).
