WISC Consultation highlights achievements, creates roadmap for future of worker support

New Delhi, INDIA (ILO News): Trade union leaders and representatives from the International Labour Organization (ILO) convened in New Delhi for a consultation on the Worker Information and Support Centre (WISC) initiative. The meeting celebrated the significant achievements of WISCs across India and explored strategies to enhance their impact and sustainability.

WISCs: A Lifeline for Workers During Crisis and Beyond

Established in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, WISCs have evolved into vital hubs providing essential services and support to workers, particularly those in the informal sector. The consultation highlighted WISC's success in:

• Delivering crucial aid during the pandemic: WISCs played a critical role in providing food, accommodation, and essential supplies to migrant workers during the COVID-19 lockdown.
• Connecting workers with government schemes: Through awareness campaigns and digital literacy training, WISCs have facilitated access to social security benefits for thousands of workers.
• Empowering vulnerable workers: WISCs have championed the rights of marginalized workers, including domestic workers, construction workers, and those employed in Special Economic Zones (SEZs).

We want to know how this partnership makes a WISC different from a standard trade union support centre. More importantly and looking ahead, are there ways in which this value can be amplified?
