A week dedicated to Start and Improve Your Business (SIYB)Programme in Georgia
In order to raise awareness of Start and Improve Your Business (SIYB) Programme and its recent developments and to explore the potential for future partnerships, the International Labour Organization (ILO) brought together potential partner organizations (including UN agencies, embassies, international organisations, government agencies, and private sector representatives) for a promotion event, on 29th May, at Radisson Blu Iveria Tbilisi Hotel.

In the period of 2019 - 2023 the ILO-Danida Project „Inclusive Labour Market for Job Creation in Georgia” has developed the Start and Improve Your Business (SIYB) Framework adapted to the Georgian context.
Today there are 31 (24 women and 7 men) certified SIYB trainers in Georgia to support entrepreneurs and promote youth entrepreneurship They are affiliated to 11 state agencies and organizations and cover 7 regions of Georgia. They are equipped with the SIYB training modules Generate Your Business Idea (GYB), Start Your Business (SYB), and Improve Your Business (IYB) which have been adapted for Georgia.
In order to provide trainings during the pandemic, the online SIYB modules, including the recently developed Digitalise Your Business (DYB) module, were also adapted to the Georgian context, which allowed to reach out to the people located in different regions.
Since January 2023, the Georgian Employers’ Association (GEA) became an ILO-SIYB Partner Organization, being able to independently organize SIYB trainings for potential entrepreneurs and business owners. 23 certified trainers established the Association Start and Improve Your Business-Georgia and it also became ILO-SIYB Partner Organisation in March 2023.
During the project implementation, more than 500 potential youth entrepreneurs in Georgia learned how to generate a business idea and start a business. As of today we have information on the registration of 31 businesses. In total, more than 600 persons were trained, including entrepreneurs benefiting of IYB module.
“We dedicated the week of 29 May – 2 June 2023 to SIYB activities, aiming to promote the existent SIYB Framework in Georgia, to refresh and complement the knowledge of potential entrepreneurs, and to work on strategic approach for the future of the SIYB programme in Georgia”, said Cătălin Ţacu, Chief Technical Adviser, ILO-Danida Project „Inclusive Labour Market for Job Creation in Georgia”.
On 29 May, Tbilisi hosted an SIYB promotion event. The participants listened to the presentations of SIYB trainers. Luisa Iachan, ILO, provided an overview of the SIYB global products and Cristina Martinez, ILO, shared the opportunities of the Green Economy for business creation and development. By the end of the event, SIYB Master Trainer, Aisulu Meimankanova presented a roadmap for sustainability of SIYB programme in Georgia.
“MSMEs and potential entrepreneurs in Georgia now have a golden opportunity to embrace the digital and green economy, thanks to the remarkable contributions made by the ILO-DANIDA Project 'Inclusive Labour Market for Job Creation in Georgia’. This initiative has successfully built the local capacity of national partner organizations to continue delivering entrepreneurship training after the end of the project to develop sustainable businesses, create jobs for women and men and benefit the wider community.” - Luisa Iachan, Technical Officer, Inclusive Markets and Entrepreneurship, SME Unit in the ILO Headquarters.
At the SIYB Re-fresher Forum on 1 June, 27 entrepreneurs (14 women and 13 men) with the help of SIYB trainers, re-freshed their knowledge on ILO SIYB programme and learned about new SIYB global products and ILO’s approach for starting a business with a focus on Green Economy.
The forum presented success stories of SIYB entrepreneurs in Georgia Ms. Maniko Mokia’s (26 years) ”Chveneburebi Restaurant”, Mr.Giorgi Mzhavia’s (26 years) “Quali Farm”, and Maiko Kvirikadze’s (29 years) “Nimani” Flowers Shop”. Access to finance were discussed in the final session of the forum, representatives from Enterprise Georgia (EG), Georgia's Innovation and Technology Agency (GITA), and Rural Development Agency (RDA) presented funding opportunities related to government support programmes for potential entrepreneurs and start-ups.
Cristina Martinez, Senior Specialist, leading Enterprise Development, Green Jobs-Just Transition at the Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia, Decent Work Technical Support Team for Eastern Europe and Central Asia said: “Many entrepreneurial opportunities are available from the circular economy for innovators able to see what new business models can achieve for producing-using-reusing products. New opportunities are found in eliminating waste throughout lifecycle, creating a circular system of reuse, excluding toxics and using renewable sources, powered by renewable energy and applying digitalization & artificial intelligence solutions. SIYB training in Georgia shared multi-stakeholder perspectives including Government action for providing incentives for entrepreneurship.”
