Voices from the ILC 2017

The 106th session of the International Labour Conference took place from 5th until 16th June 2017 in Geneva. Tripartite Delegations from all member countries came together to discuss how to build a future with decent work.

Besides the work and achievements of the Committees, attendants across the Region shared their thoughts on various issues through speeches, side events and interviews with the public. We captured some of these voices for you.

Social dialogue plays a key role for successful negotiations, on national as well as on international level. Norway's Minister of Labour, Anniken Hauglie, shared her country's experiences on a special presentation on their model of Social dialogue on 7 June. Ylva Johansson, Swedish Minister of Labour, pointed out how the Global Deal, a multi-stakeholder partnership, can through effective social dialogue contribute to decent work, greater equality and inclusive growth. Mr Mikhail Shmakov, Chairman of the Federation of the Independent Trade Unions of Russia, talked about the role of trade unions in the digital economy.

Prior to the Conference, the Director-General submitted his report "Work in a changing climate: The Green Initiative". Alexandre Shokhin, President of the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs, talked about chances and challenges of the green economy (Russian only). This is also an important issue for Azerbaijan's Minister of Labour and Social Protection, Salim Muslumov, who talked about the economic situation and reforms in his country (Russian only).

One of the conference's highlights was the World of Work summit on 15 June. Based on the "World Employment and Social Outlook (WESO) - Trends for Women 2017" report, it called for a better future for women at work. The President of Malta, Marie Louise Coleiro Preca, delivered an impressive speech on gender parity and the power of women.
