VCT@WORK: implementation throughout the country

Today on December 1 the whole world celebrates the World AIDS Day. The workplaces face a special task to spread the knowledge on the disease, ways of transmission, prevention, treatment, unacceptance of stigma and discrimination towards workers living with HIV as well as promote workers for regular testing and conscious urge to know their HIV status.

The ILO Global Initiative “Voluntary and Confidential Counselling and Testing at the Workplace” was implemented in Russia in 2016 with the support from the International Labour Organization. One of the major landmarks in this activity was a four days long VCT event implemented by the Krasnodar AIDS Center with support from the Ministry of Labour and Ministry of Health in April 2016. The event took place at the major national OSH platform – All Russian OSH Week in Sochi. Mr. Grigoriy Lekarev, Deputy Minister of Labour and Social Protection of the Russian Federation and Mr. Valeriy Korzh, Director of the OSH Department of the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection of the Russian Federation participated in the VCT event.

Also during this year the VCT@WORK campaign continued at the JS “Siberian Coal Energy Company” (SUEK). Besides pilot events at the enterprises in Kuzbass implemented jointly with the ILO SUEK initiated activities that were implemented by the regional AIDS Centers at its enterprises in Zabaikalskiy krai, Primorskiy krai and Kemerovskaya territory. Mr. Vladimir Lisovskiy, Deputy director on industrial operations together with other representatives of the Moscow management of SUEK participated in the VCT events in Sochi.

A number of large Russian companies, such as JSC “Russian Railways”, JSC “Gazprom Oil” and LLC “Irkutsk Oil Company” expressed their readiness to start implementation of the VCT@WORK at their workplaces in 2016. First pilot actions took place jointly with the ILO and AIDS Centers at the South-Urals and Sverdlovsk Railways. The events were supported by the thematic exhibitions, discussions with workers and presentations at the workplaces that were implemented by the specialists of the regional AIDS Centers and attracted interest and lively response of the railway employees. Ministry of Labour and Social Protection of the Russian Federation supervises the organization and piloting of the HIV and AIDS programmes at the JSC “Russian Railways” workplaces.
