Tripartite meeting on work in fishing held in Spain
The ILO office for Spain has promoted this meeting on the occasion of the entry into force in Spain of ILO Work in Fishing Convention 188.

The ILO Work in Fishing Convention, 2007 (No. 188) has entered into force in Spain on 29 February 2024, one year after its ratification. On this occasion, the ILO office for Spain has promoted a tripartite meeting in which the interested parties, Administrations with competences in the matter, trade unions and employers, have shared the progress and concerns in the application of the convention.
The meeting was attended by the Director-General for the Merchant Navy of the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, the Deputy Director-General for Economic Sustainability and Social Affairs of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, the Social Marine Institute of the Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration, the Labour and Social Security Inspection of the Ministry of Labour and Social Economy, the employer's association CEPESCA, the fishing section of the Federation of Citizen Services of the CCOO trade union and the federal maritime secretariat of the FeSMC UGT trade union, all in the persons of their top representatives.
The participants agreed on the importance of applying ILO Convention 188 in Spain in order to contribute to improving working conditions in the sector. At the same time, they reflected on its importance in helping to make this work more attractive in view of the difficulties caused by the growing shortage of labour, as well as the element of differentiation that socially responsible production represents. The authorities have expressed that they are working in coordination to carry out the relevant inspections, sharing with those present the steps taken, and have transmitted the latest advances in this regard.
The director of the ILO Office for Spain, Félix Peinado, has offered the ILO's technical assistance in the process of implementing the Convention and reported on the training activities on inspection of working conditions on board fishing vessels, planned this year by the ILO's International Training Centre in Turin (Italy).
Fishing is one of the toughest and most dangerous occupations, and the ILO works to ensure decent working conditions for all fishers. Convention 188 aims to ensure that fishers enjoy decent working conditions in terms of minimum requirements for work on board, conditions of service, accommodation and food, occupational safety and health protection, medical care and social security. Its ratification and entry into force in Spain is a further step towards improving working conditions in fisheries.
