Training Workshop towards an Integrated Labour Inspection System for the Mining Sector in Zambia
The ILO mining sector project held a two day workshop in Kitwe on integrated labour inspection systems for the mining sector in Zambia.

The workshop was attended by 17 participants who were drawn from the following inspectorates: Department of Labour, Occupational Safety and Health under the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, Mines Safety Department, and the Institute of Occupational Health and Safety.
The workshop came about as a result of previous meetings held with the ILO and the tripartite constituents on the necessity of the inspectorates in the mining sector to work together in order to raise the productivity levels of the inspection visits. It was agreed that the ILO would facilitate a workshop for the Inspectorates of Labour, Occupational Health and Safety under the MLSS, the Mines Safety Unit and the Institute of Occupational Health and Safety in Kitwe. The workshop served as a tool to enhance the participants’ knowledge and understanding of the respective roles and responsibilities of each directorate and establish possibilities of working together in the area of labour inspections if common priorities are identified. Specifically the workshop covered the following objectives:
The workshop turned into a successful learning session with full participation. A committee was established within the workshop, consisting of 6 members, whose task was to draft details in order to make this collaboration official and clearly identify each parties mandate and terms of reference. The parties embraced the concept of one enterprise one inspection or integrated labour inspections system. They requested the ILO to provide appropriate training on the concept.

- To outline the ILO instruments dealing with Labour Administration and Occupational Health and Safety, and how they relate to national law and practice
- To learn from the respective Inspectorates of Labour, Occupational Safety and Health under the MLSS, Mines Safety Unit, and the Institute of Occupational Health and Safety in Kitwe, but under the Ministry of Mines, Energy and Water Development, and Ministry of Health respectively: Roles and responsibilities, challenges in Inspections in the Mining sector
- Learn from the respective Inspectorates on what risk assessments tools are in use, and whether they are adequate or need improvement
- Establish ways of working together as an Integrated Inspection Team from Government
