Trade unions’ role in ensuring occupational safety and health at railways of CIS and Baltic states – seminar in Astana
On July 9, the first joint seminar for trade unions of railway workers from CIS and Baltic states ended its work in Kazakhstan’s capital Astana. It focused on trade unions’ role in ensuring occupational safety and health and traffic safety at railways of CIS and Baltic states.

The seminar was organized by the International Labour Organization, the International Transport Workers’ Federation, the International Confederation of Railway Workers’ and Transport Builders’ Unions and the Trade Union of Railway Workers of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
It brought together railway trade unionists from ten countries – Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Uzbekistan, Ukraine and Estonia.
During a three day dialogue colleagues from different countries discussed mechanisms for legislative regulation of occupational safety and health and set out joint plans for modernizing work of trade unions.
“Participation of railway trade unionists from ten countries in this seminar helped exchange experience and new approaches to work,” said Orazgali Akhmetbayev, chairman of the Trade Union of Railway Workers of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
“I think that introduction of a new occupational safety and health system by participants in the seminar is a timely measure,” said Sergeyus Glovackas, ILO Moscow Senior Specialist in Workers’ Activities. “Of course, this will not happen in the wink of an eye, but I very much hope that after this seminar every delegate will introduce more thoroughly the systematic approach developed here. Such events not only contribute to daily activity of trade unions, but they also give a strong impetus for its improvement.”
