DAKHA (ACTRAV INFO) Around 40 trade union leaders from 20 countries in the Asia Pacific region are to attend a seminar organized by the ILO Bureau for Workers‘ Activities (ACTRAV) on strengthening union activities. The seminar is taking place at the Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel in Dhaka, Bangladesh on 24 - 26 June.
Subjects on the seminar’s agenda include the increasing abuse of union rights, harassment, detention of trade union leaders, denial of rights to form unions, the right to collective bargaining and severe restrictions on the right to industrial action, including the right to strike. Participants will also consider how to strengthen dialogue at enterprise, industrial and national levels.
The Asia Pacific region has seen steady economic growth for a number of years but at the same time unions claim there has been a decline in basic human and trade union rights. Restrictive labour laws have denied basic freedoms to trade unions and workers.
A major objective of the ILO is to assist governments, employers and trade unions in formulating appropriate labour laws that promote collective bargaining, tripartism and effective labour inspection.
Trade unions play a major role in reducing inequality, eradicating poverty and uplifting the economic conditions of workers and their families by promoting the fair distribution of income through social dialogue with Employers and Governments.
