Towards ratification of ILO Conventions in Georgia

Government and social partners in Georgia will enhance social dialogue and promote the ratification of ILO Conventions, according to the conclusions of a conference held in Tbilisi on 2 May 2019.

“The Government of Georgia is considering the ratification of several Conventions, as its contribution to the ILO Centenary celebrations,” said Tamara Barkalaia, Deputy labour Minister of Georgia.

Irakli Petriashvili, President of the Georgian Trade Union Confederation (GTUC), explained that the gender pay gap, protection of women workers and safety in the mining sector remain key challenges to be addressed in Georgia.

“Government and Parliament should intensify their efforts to urgently ratify ILO Conventions, in particular Conventions 183 on Maternity Protection, 176 on Safety and Health in Mines and n°156 on Workers with Family Responsibilities,” he said.

Together with the President of the Georgian Employers’ Association, Elguja Meladze, Petriashvili confirmed their strong commitment to social dialogue and respect for international labour standards across the country.

Maria Helena ANDRE, Director of the ILO’s Bureau for Workers’ Activities (ACTRAV)encouraged government and social partners to reinforce social dialogue and make it systematic, which, she said, are key ingredients to address the challenges of the future of work. On this occasion, Ms Andre presented the report of the Global Commission on the Future of Work, recalling that only a human-centred agenda is the right response to the challenge of achieving a future of work that provides decent and sustainable work.

Convention n°144 on Tripartite Consultations to Promote the Implementation of International Labour Standards entered into force on 8 May 2019.

The Government and social partners reaffirmed their commitment to extend social dialogue in an institutionalized way in all regions of Georgia.
