Towards building the capacity of labour migration analysts in the IGAD region

5 June 2020

The ILO-IGAD FMPT project launched in November 2019, the Labour Migration Experts Reference Group (LMERG), as part of its objective to build the capacity of key stakeholders, on Labour migration and mobility Governance in the IGAD region.

The LMERG is currently following it first course on "Labour Migration Governance and Coherence with Employment Policies" organize by the ITCILO in collaboration with the FMPT project. The objective of this course is to build and strengthen the capacities of IGAD region policy makers at various ministries and social partners to design and implement labour migration policies through access to tools and instruments for evidence-based policy making on labour migration and ensuring policy coherence. The course provides practical and succinct guidance to the LMERG members to increase their capacity in the development or revision of national labour migration strategy, policy and action plan. Additionally, they learn from the ILO practical guidance on promoting coherence among employment, education/training and labour migration policies formulated by the ILO. The training indeed, provides information on the importance of policy coherence as labour migration issues interact with other national and regional policy priorities, including employment, education, vocational training, social protection and gender equality.

The LMERG meets every week virtually to review the course content, share country experiences, and get update on the FMPT project delivery.

After participating in the course, members of the LMERG will be empowered to successfully contribute to their respective countries’ and organizations’ migration policies while having a direct impact on how policies are developed and implemented to improve the life and working conditions of migrant workers in and from the IGAD region.

The FMPT project is funded by the EU and implemented in collaboration with IGAD secretariat.
