Third UNZA Social Protection Public Discussion held
On the 26th of June the third Social Protection Public Lecture and Discussion was held in Livingstone Zambia with more than 60 participants present. The main theme of the event was ‘Integrating climate change adaptation in Social Protection systems; and Making Policy Linkages in addressing poverty and vulnerability

Main speaker Ms. Marrian Tembo, Chief Planner in the Ministry of Community Development and Social Services, stated in her presentation that Government is making concrete steps towards a National Social Protection Bill which will enhance social protection service delivery and provide an opportunity for possible adaptation of social protection services with a focus on climate change.
Head of Research and Planning at the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit, Office of the Vice-President, Mr. Anderson Banda emphasized the need for strengthened research on linkages between social protection and climate change adaptation. He further said that sustainable development and equity provide a basis for assessing climate policies. Limiting the effects of climate change is necessary to achieve sustainable development and equity, including poverty eradication.
During the same event, Mr. Fred Moonga PhD, Lecturer at Mulungushi University, underlined that there is a need to avoid fragmentation in social protection service delivery among various state and non-state actors. This is necessary in order to maximize resource use and achieve desirable impacts of interventions.
The presentations were followed by an open discussion which engaged the audience in topics related climate change and its link to social protection with a main emphasis on the importance of research on climate change mitigation and the necessity to build on indigenous knowledge as a base for interventions. It remained clear that the need to link social protection to climate change adaptation is relevant for Zambia with a call to foster collaboration among various players as well as providing evidence-based interventions for effective results.
The June edition of the Social Protection Public Lecture and Discussion was held as part of the International Federation of Social Workers and the Social Worker Association of Zambia Joint Conference which took place from the 25th to the 28th of June, 2017 at Chrismar Hotel in Livingstone. This event was officially launched by the conference Chair, IFSW President, African Union and the Government of the Republic of Zambia. The conference provided opportunities for the Social Protection Public Lecture and Debate to broaden its reach to representatives from a wide array of professional backgrounds. At the same time, various local and international institutions were present thereby enriching the discussion and raising awareness of the importance of Social Protection and its role in addressing the effects of climate change.
The event attracted more than 60 participants from within and outside the region and was organized by the University of Zambia in collaboration with the ILO, supported by Irish Aid. UNZA is also supported by the EU-Social Protection Systems Finland for the development of undergraduate and postgraduate curricula on Social Protection.
