Lusaka (ILO News) - On November 3, the Technical Committee of the Technical Education, Vocational and Entrepreneurship Training Authority (TEVETA) Management Board approved the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) curriculum, developed by TEVETA with the technical and logistical support from the Zambia Green Jobs Programme.
The OSH curriculum development was initiated in June 2015 after the realization there was a need for OSH training in technical and vocational training institutes in Zambia. The process commenced with a training needs assessment (TNA) which was followed by the drafting of the curriculum. Prior to submission to the Technical Committee of the Board, the curriculum underwent various stakeholder discussions and consultative processes followed by validation. The final version of the curriculum has inclusions that address OSH legislation and workplace risk assessment and management among others.
With the approved curriculum all TEVETA accredited institutions in Zambia can commence offering OSH courses based on the curriculum. This will ensure sustainability of training in occupational safety and health and ultimately result in increased safety, health and welfare of people engaged in work in Zambia.
TEVETA is an institution that was created under the Technical Education, Vocational and Entrepreneurship Act (No. 13 of 1998) read together with TEVETA (Amendment) Act No. 11 of 2005. It is mandated to, among others, develop the national curricula for any occupation, skill, technology or trade in consultation with all stakeholders and to set minimum standards and qualifications for institutions in accordance with developments in industry.
