Tanzania with support from the ILO to develop apprenticeship curriculum in Dodoma

Dar es Salaam (ILO News) The ILO is supporting Vocational Education and Training institutions in Tanzania to establish and institutionalize workplace based Training programmes particularly quality apprenticeships. The ILO’s role in this initiative is to provide technical as well as financial support. The support is offered at various levels. For example, at the Macro level, the ILO supported the development and finalization of National apprenticeship framework through tripartite consultations and validation. At Meso level, ILO strengthened the capacity of companies and training institutions to design and implement quality apprenticeship programmes.

In continuation for this initiative, the ILO in collaboration with VETA, Tanzania, will from 17 to 26 July 2017, redesign and review the curricula in five (5) additional occupations in priority sectors to reflect formal apprenticeship training arrangement. The new curricula will facilitate expansion of apprenticeship programmes into more occupations which have been identified as a priority in driving the country’s industrialization process. The occupations include - Tourism (tour guide operations), and constructions (plumbing, carpentry and Joinery, brick Laying, painting and welding).

The curricula review will facilitate the expansion of the apprenticeship programmes and their implementation in the new occupations.

Workplace training programmes such Quality apprenticeship has been identified by Tanzania as among the skills development strategy to reduce school to work transition periods, promote skills relevance and employability of young people.

The apprenticeship programmes are implemented in close partnerships and involvement of employers.

VETA is the main training institution which is championing the programmes with help from development partners and VET experts.
