Tanzania: New apprenticeship training programme in the hospitality industry

Dar es Salaam (ILO News) - The new Certified Apprenticeship Programme in Hotel Operations was officially launched in Dar es Salaam to enhance skills and entrepreneurship for improved labour productivity and employment creation. The initiative is a result of a two year effort between the Tourism Confederation of Tanzania (TCT), the Hotels Association of Tanzania (HAT) in collaboration with the National College of Tourism (NCT) to develop the programme with technical expertise and financial support from International Labour Organization (ILO).

The launch was officiated by Mrs. Maimuna Tarishi, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism in the presence of government representatives, social partners, development partners and other major stakeholders of the tourism and hotel sectors.

The apprenticeship curriculum runs for two years with apprentices aged between 17-25 years rotating in all hotel departments. The programme is also aimed at actively engaging employers in training as part of ensuring that graduates possess skills relevant to the labour market requirement in the tourism sector.

The creative program provides an opportunity for young apprentices to get relevant skills, to combine work and learning and to reduce the school to work transition gap while improving productivity and employability of young people. It also allow the hospitality sector to contribute to the development of locally grown skilled workers thereby reducing the cost of doing business through retraining and or employing foreigners.

The launch of the Certified Apprenticeship Programme in Hotel Operations provides a new skills development option in the tourism sector.
