Tajikistan's citizens working abroad sent over 1.6bn dollars to the motherland in January-September this year, which is by 27.7 per cent more compared with the same period last year, the chairman of the country's National Bank, Sharif Rahimzoda, has said.
"The increase in a volume of remittances is connected with the improvement of the economic situation in Russia and Kazakhstan. However, these figures are not real figures because money comes to Tajikistan not only through the banking system," he told a news conference in Dushanbe today.
Remittances sent by migrant workers made up 42.8 per cent of Tajikistan's GDP during this period.
"However, these figures are far from reaching those marked before the crisis in 2008. In order to reach those figures, volumes of remittances should be increased by 45 per cent and more," the head of the National Bank of Tajikistan said.
Remittances of Tajik migrant workers sent to the motherland decreased by 31.3 per cent in 2009 and made up over 1.8bn dollars.
According to Tajik experts, about one million of the country's citizens work in Russia and Kazakhstan, and 90 per cent of them work in the Russian Federation.
