Suriname enterprises gain green business skills

The impact of climate change on micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) poses significant challenges to their resilience, productivity, and profitability. To address these issues, the International Labour Organization (ILO) My Green Enterprise (MGE) Programme has been introduced in Suriname to help businesses transition towards sustainability. The initiative aligns with the third Decent Work Country Programme (DWCP III) for Suriname, focusing on sustainable economic growth and job creation.

The MGE Programme is an ILO business development methodology that promotes the establishment of environmentally sustainable and innovative businesses. It also helps existing SMEs in integrating cleaner processes and reducing their environmental impact. Given that SMEs make up over 90 percent of businesses worldwide, their collective contribution to environmental sustainability and formal employment is substantial.

“My Green Enterprise is the best methodology to start up green businesses or make existing businesses greener – resulting in a greener world for all of us,” said participant Detie Jagan, Head Policy Officer for the National Bureau of Gender, Ministry of Internal Affairs.

In the context of DWCP III, the programme contributes to the first priority under "Jobs, Productivity, and Sustainable Growth." The primary aim is to develop sustainable green sectors and value chains to transition Suriname towards a diversified and resilient economy. This is achieved through the identification of key green sectors, as well as the establishment of inclusive green enterprises, ultimately expanding the supply of decent jobs.

The training targets two main groups:

• Aspiring entrepreneurs who wish to establish businesses that are not only profitable but also environmentally and socially responsible. The programme equips them with the tools to transform a green business idea into a viable business plan.
• Existing business owners who aim to adopt cleaner production processes, minimize their carbon footprint, and promote green products and services. The programme provides a structured approach to designing a business greening plan.

The most recent MGE workshop took place from 3 February to 7 February 2025. During the five-day, in-person event, a Training of Trainers (ToT) session was being conducted in Paramaribo with the participation of 20 professionals. These individuals represent key stakeholders from the private sector, worker organizations, public institutions (such as the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Youth affairs, and the Ministry of Internal Affairs), as well as non-governmental organizations (NGOs).

“My Green Enterprise training from the ILO was an enlightening experience – rich in knowledge, dynamic in participation and invaluable for one of the greenest countries on Earth – Suriname,” said Arianne de Bye, Executive Board Representative for national employers group the Vereniging Surinaams Bedrijfsleven (VSB).

Following the training, participants will assist, support, and monitor at least 80 potential entrepreneurs and businesses in implementing green practices. They will also submit reports and evidence for certification.

The implementation of the My Green Enterprise Programme in Suriname marks a significant step towards fostering sustainable economic development. By equipping entrepreneurs and business owners with the necessary skills and methodologies, this initiative will contribute to a greener economy, enhance job creation, and support the country’s transition towards environmental sustainability. This also connects with the desire of financial service providers to increase their green portfolio and having green bankable projects.
