Supporting VCT@Work Campaign in Kenya
The ILO Regional Director for Africa, Aeneas C. Chuma, paid a visit to the VCT@Work stand to witness first-hand the effectiveness of voluntary counseling and testing Interventions in Nairobi, Kenya.
NAIROBI (ILO News) – In the framework of the partnership between ILO, the Federation of Kenyan Employers (FKE), the Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU-K) and the Steering Committee for informal sector, Aeneas Chuma, ILO Assistant Director-General and Regional Director for Africa, visited the VCT@Work stand where testing was taking place for prevention, detection and treatment of HIV infection.
On the occasion of Kenya's 50th International Labour Day Celebrations and COTU-K Golden Jubilee, the Regional Director visited the VCT@Work sessions to support the work ILO is doing in scaling up access to testing among Kenyan women and men workers.
The Initiative in Kenya is driven by ILO constituents, the Ministry of Labour, Social Security and Services, FKE and COTU-K, together with key implementing partners such as the LVCT, a service provider that is allowing ILO to reach out to counties and informal workers.
With HIV/AIDS continuing to be a major public health concern in Kenya, enhancing workers awareness of the benefits of early HIV diagnosis and increasing access to VCT testing sites are key priorities for the ILO and its partners.
Aeneas Chapinga Chuma attended the 50th anniversary of the Central Organization of Trade Unions of Kenya with a call to a strong trade union unity.
