Statement on Hurricane Dorian from Ms Claudia Coenjaerts, Director, ILO Decent Work Team and Office for the Caribbean
ILO pledges its support to working with the government, businesses and workers in the Bahamas in the aftermath of Hurricane Dorian.

The ILO Decent Work Team and Office for the Caribbean stands in solidarity with all those affected by the destruction and devastation of Hurricane Dorian, including the people and the Government of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas as well as our social partners.
While initial response efforts coordinated through the Regional Response Mechanism (RRM) are prioritizing humanitarian needs such as access to food, water, shelter and medical supplies, the ILO is committed to working with our partners in the United Nations system and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) to provide recovery assistance to The Bahamas where needed.
Our Office has also contacted The Bahamas Ministry of Labour, as well as The National Congress of Trade Unions of The Bahamas, The Commonwealth of The Bahamas Trade Union Congress and The Bahamas Chamber Of Commerce and Employers’ Confederation to express our concern and support.
The immediate need for The Bahamas is emergency relief for the many people affected by the devastation left by Hurricane Dorian, followed by rehabilitation and reconstruction of homes and essential infrastructure.
In the context of a trend towards more frequent and severe weather systems hitting the Caribbean, continuous building of systems to increase resilience is needed. The ILO will continue working with its tripartite constituents to develop and implement labour-related policies and programmes for climate adaptation, disaster prevention, risk mitigation, preparedness and recovery. This with the final aim to help countries build more resilient labour markets and transition to greener and more sustainable economies.
