Solomon Islands ratifies the Maritime Labour Convention, 2006, as amended (MLC, 2006) and the Work in Fishing Convention, 2007 (No. 188)

Geneva (ILO News) - On 8th of January, the International Labour Office (ILO) received the instruments of ratification of the Maritime Labour Convention, 2006, as amended (MLC, 2006) and the Work in Fishing Convention, 2007 (No. 188), by the Solomon Islands.

The Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Solomon Islands, H.E. Honourable Mr Moses Kouni Mosé, formally submitted the ratification instruments. During the ceremony, he stated “By ratifying the MLC, 2006 and Convention No. 188, the Solomon Islands reaffirm its strong commitment towards the rights and the welfare of seafarers and fishers. Solomon Islands, determined to become an important player in the maritime and fishing sectors, looks forward to working closely with the ILO and welcomes the offer of capacity building support in the effective implementation of the two conventions”.

When receiving the instrument of ratification, ILO Director-General, Gilbert Houngbo, stated that “These ratifications are a significant milestone that demonstrates the country’s commitment to international labour standards and the protection of seafarers’ and fishers’ living and working conditions. It also paves the way for continuous improvements in labour practices across the maritime and fishing sectors. The Office stands ready to accompany Solomon Islands on this path”.

Both Conventions will enter into force for Solomon Islands on 8 January 2027, that is one year after their ratification.
