Social Security Experts meeting on coordination of Social Security benefits within an EAC Common Market, Kampala, Uganda
Meeting to develop a road-map for the finalization of the directive on social security coordination within the sub region

The East African Community (EAC) in collaboration with the ILO are convening a social security experts meeting in Kampala, Uganda from 11 to 13 June 2018 to deliberate on the co-ordination of social security benefits within the EAC Common Market. The meeting will be attended by about forty (40) representatives from ministries of labour, social security institutions and social partners from the respective EAC member countries.
Among others, the meeting will receive presentations on legislative and policy framework on social security benefits from the partner States and status reports on the findings of the actuarial studies by their respective national social security institutions, taking into consideration the recommendations made at the previous experts meeting held in 2011.
The above meeting is being held under the auspices of a programme on Extending social protection access and portability of benefits to migrant workers and their families in selected Regional Economic Communities (RECs) in Africa with financial support from European Commission through the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD). This action is within the overall support to the Africa-EU Migration and Mobility Dialogue (MMD) which aims to “Foster and share experiences on the transposition and operationalization of free movement as well as dealing with the challenges of social protection.
The ILO and EAC, through a recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), collaborate on a range of initiatives including – implementation of a subregional Decent Work Programme (DWP) focusing on youth employment, social protection, HIV and AIDS and social dialogue.
