Shaping a sustainable future: Tanzanian employers turning vision into results
The Association of Tanzania Employers (ATE) has taken a pioneering step by participating in an environmental, social, and governance (ESG) Training of Trainers (ToT) followed by a first implementation of a training programme geared towards their membership to improve ESG performance.

Dar es Salaam, Tanzania (ILO News) – Expectations for businesses to improve their environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance have increased significantly in recent years, driven by both national and international regulations. For Tanzania companies, these developments have direct implications, especially for those engaged in trade with European Union (EU) companies.
The Association of Tanzania Employers (ATE) is leading ESG efforts by launching training for its members. With technical support from the International Training Centre of the ILO (ITCILO) and ILO’s Bureau for Employers’ Activities (ACT/EMP), this programme equips businesses with practical tools to enhance their capacities for responsible business practices.
Following ATE’s participation in an ILO-led Training of Trainers (ToT) programme in Dar es Salaam from 1-2 July 2025, it quickly brought the training home. From July 3 to 4 2025, representatives from 40 enterprises across 8 economic sectors took part in the first implementation of the ESG training, demonstrating a strong commitment to sustainability and responsible business conduct.
We are honoured to lead this important effort in Tanzania. By equipping our members with the tools and resources to improve ESG performance within their companies, we can build a stronger foundation for responsible and sustainable enterprise development in Tanzania. ATE CEO Ms. Suzanne Ndomba-Doran
This initiative highlights the Association of Tanzania Employers’ leadership and commitment to promoting responsible enterprise practices, setting a standard for other employer organizations in the region.
