Seminars on Occupational Safety and Health in Baku.
In mid-January Baku hosted two seminars organized by the International Labour Organization: one – on safety in the construction sector and another – for labour inspections.

The seminars brought together around 100 representatives of the Azerbaijani Labour Ministry, Emergencies Ministry, labour inspections, social partners, representatives of the republic’s construction industry, ILO experts and journalists.
The first seminar reviewed the situation in the informal construction sector and opportunities to introduce OSH management systems. Participants also discussed youth employment in the construction sector and analyzed the training systems for young specialists. They stressed that special attention should be paid to the assessment of risks young people can face at the start of their career and informal employment practices.
The training seminar for labour inspections focused on the ILO systematic approach to OSH at the national and enterprise level, the information system of labour inspections and plans to modernize inspections as well as the introduction of GOST 12.0.230-2007 (ILO-OSH 2001) at Azerbaijan’s enterprises.
ILO experts recommended Azerbaijan to ratify Conventions 155, 167 and 187 (Occupational Safety and Health Convention, Safety and Health in Construction Convention and Promotional Framework for Occupational Safety and Health Convention). They also called for introducing social partnership and dialogue within the framework of safety committees and organizing motivating training for workers and members of safety committees.
