Russia said to be seeking Tajik approval for new migrant labour rules
Russia is seeking a deal with Tajikistan that would update existing agreements governing the movement of migrant workers between the two countries, the privately-owned Russian news agency Interfax reported on 21 October.

Under the changes proposed by Russia, the two countries would impose a three-year limit on work permits issued to each other's nationals, but would also allow migrant workers to extend their temporary stays in the other country without having to return home to obtain an extension. Russia's prime minister, Dmitriy Medvedev, has instructed officials to draw up documents that would amend an agreement signed by the two countries in 2004.
According to Interfax, part of the document drawn up by Russian officials reads: "Workers shall work on a temporary basis in the host state provided that they have the relevant document, issued in accordance with the legislation of the host state. A work permit is issued to a worker for the same period as the employment contract he has signed, but for no more than three years."
It adds: "A work permit forms the basis for the extension of a worker's temporary stay in the host state for the duration of the permit, without leaving the host state."
In recent years, tens of thousands of Tajiks have migrated to Moscow and other parts of Russia in search of work. The remittances they send home form a significant share of Tajikistan's gross domestic product.
