Russia ratifies ILO Occupational Safety and Health Convention

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev signed the federal law to ratify the ILO Promotional Framework for Occupational Safety and Health Convention, 2006 (No. 187).
The law was adopted by the State Duma on September 24 and the Federation Council on September 29.
The Convention implies that each Member which ratifies this Convention shall promote continuous improvement of occupational safety and health to prevent occupational injuries, diseases and deaths, by the development, in consultation with the most representative organizations of employers and workers, of a national policy, national system and national programme.
The term “occupational safety and health” is an equivalent to the term applied in the Russian legislation, says Valentina Petrenko, the chairperson of the Federation Council committee for social policy and healthcare.
In the Labour Code of the Russian Federation occupational safety and health is defined as a system of life and health preservation of employees during their labour activity, including legal, socioeconomic, organizational, sanitation, treatment and preventionmeasures.
