Roundtable discussion on social policy and economic perspective in Iraq
The roundtable discussion is part of efforts to enhance social dialogue among policymakers, researchers, and practitioners, allowing them to exchange ideas, knowledge, and experience on social policy in Iraq.

(ILO News) Baghdad, Iraq - The ILO, together with the Media Center for Civil Society Organizations in Iraq organised the first inclusive roundtable discussion as a part of a series of workshops, which focus on social security in Federal Iraq.
The one-day event, which took place in Baghdad on Saturday (January 29) brought together policymakers, members of parliament, trade union representative, researchers, and practitioners from various fields and backgrounds to exchange ideas, knowledge and views on past and present social policy in Iraq.
The roundtable aimed to provide a tool to stimulate constructive dialogue leading to policy messages for policymakers and advocate for prioritization of resources.
Under a social protection reform programme supported by the European Union, the ILO is working closely with the Government of Iraq to extend the scope of social security through legislative reform and capacity building support.
Part of these activities also includes raising awareness among workers in the private sector, particularly those working in the informal sector, on the benefits of social security, and cultivating broader support for social security coverage among unregistered workers as well as the wider Iraqi public.
These workshops will support these outreach activities by upholding knowledge and brainstorming ideas about ongoing social policy in Iraq.
These efforts are part of activities being implemented under a wider joint social protection programme in Iraq to reform social protection and the effectiveness of its response to ongoing socio-economic shocks. Supported by the European Union, the social protection programme is implemented by the ILO, UNICEF, WFP and the Government of Iraq.
