Role of local media discussed in Ordu on eliminating child labour
A seminar held to discuss how the media should most accurately address child labour in seasonal agriculture.

ORDU – The role of local media in eliminating child labour was discussed in Ordu.
An awareness-raising seminar was held for the members of local media in Ordu in the framework of “Elimination of Child Labour in Seasonal Agriculture” project implemented by the International Labour Organization (ILO) and Ministry of Labour and Social Security (MoLSS) with EU funding, and “An Integrated Model for the Elimination of the Worst Forms of Child Labour in Seasonal Agriculture in Hazelnut Harvesting in Turkey” project, also implemented by ILO and MoLSS with funding from the Association of Chocolate, Biscuit and Confectionery Industries of Europe (CAOBISCO).
Aiming to create awareness on news-reporting practices focusing on the rights of children in seasonal agriculture, the second of local media seminars started with the opening remarks of Mr. Nejat Kocabay, ILO Senior Programme Coordinator; and Mr. Suat Dede, Head of Employment Policies Department of the General Directorate of Labour of MoLSS.
The seminar then continued with a presentation by Prof. Dr. Mr. Nezih Orhon, Head of Cinema & Television Department of the Faculty of Communications, Anadolu University. The presentation addressed the question of “How to engage in better journalism on child labour”, then assessed various instances of correct and incorrect practices based on actual cases.
The seminar was attended by local media members from Ordu, Giresun and Samsun.
Projects being implemented under the Programme aim to outreach both children in and those under risk of child labour, provide children with education and care services at social support centres and schools, thereby contribute to children’s social development and continuation in education. Projects also provide advice and counselling to family members of seasonal agricultural workers to avoid child labour, and aim to strengthen inter-institutional coordination mechanisms to eliminate the worst forms of child labour.
The project “Elimination of Child Labour in Seasonal Agriculture” funded by the European covers the provinces of Şanlıurfa, Mardin, Adıyaman, Diyarbakır, Adana, Mersin, Hatay, Izmir, Manisa, Ankara, Eskişehir, Konya, Malatya, Ordu, Bursa and Düzce.
The project “Elimination of Worst Forms of Child Labour in Seasonal Hazelnut Agriculture in Turkey” with support from Ferrero covers the provinces of Trabzon, Zonguldak and Şanlıurfa.
