Results of the first-ever child labour survey presented in Tajikistan
On December 19, ILO constituents and international experts saw in Dushanbe a presentation of the data from the first-ever child labour survey conducted in Tajikistan in 2012-2013 by the Statistics Agency under the President of Tajikistan in close cooperation with the ILO’s International Programme on the Elimination of Child Labour (ILO-IPEC).

The survey was aimed at assessing the spread of child labour and employment of children (aged between 5 to 17 years) in the Republic of Tajikistan, the nature of work, potential effects of employment of children on their health and schooling results.
According to the survey, there are 2.2 million of children aged between 5 to 17 years in Tajikistan. Of them 23.4 percent or 522,000 are working children. The highest level of child employment (45.5 percent) is registered among boys aged between 15 to 17 years. However, the level of employment is also rather high among children aged between 5 to 11 years.
Although the child employment level is high, the school attendance rate remains no less high. It makes almost 100 percent among children aged between 7 to 15 years, while in the 16-to-17-year-old age group it reduces to 83.6 percent. Children more often combine their school studies with unpaid work in households. More than 20 percent of them combine school studies, work in households with paid employment. Thus, in the 16-to-17-year-old age group the share of children, who attend only school, makes up a mere 5.2 percent.
Speaking at the event the Director of the Agency of Statistics of Tajikistan Ms. Gulnara Khasanzoda stated that this first child labour survey was conducted with the technical and financial support of ILO-IPEC in Tajikistan. “Survey results presented today will help the government to develop more coherent and well- defined policy in the area of elimination of child labour, protection of children rights and social protection of children”, she said.
The first Deputy Ministry of Labour, Migration and Employment Mr . Emin Sanginzoda indicated that the issue of child labour is high on the government’s agenda. “With this child labour survey now Tajikistan has national statistic on child labou”, he added.
The event brought together officials from the Coordination Council on the Elimination of the Worst Forms of Child Labour, the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Migration, the Ministry of Education and Science, the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Health and Social Protection, representatives of workers' and employers' organizations, non-governmental organizations, experts from the ILO, the United Nations Development Programme, the United Nations Children’s Fund, the World Bank, etc.
