Reinforced social dialogue in Malawi
The ILO Bureau of Employers ACTEMP and the Bureau of Workers ACTRAV support cooperation between workers and employers in Malawi

A bipartite workshop between Malawi Congress of Trade Unions (MCTU) and Employers Consultative Association of Malawi (ECAM was held in Salima, Malawi from 6 – 8 September 2022 with the support of the ILO Bureau for Employers Activities, ACTEMP, and the Bureau for Workers Activities, ACTRAV.
The workshop brought together thirty top leaders of MCTU and ECAM to discuss issues of common interest and build on their bilateral relationship for mutual gain. The workshop outlined issues that the parties would like to work on together namely:
• Violence and harassment in the world of work,
• Lobbying for legislative changes,
• Recognition of the right to organise,
• National minimum wage issues
• Temporary workers and short-term contracts,
• The challenge of youth unemployment
The parties then agreed to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for bipartite social dialogue on policy issues to guide their cooperation arrangements.
On 9th August 2023 in Lilongwe, the two parties signed the MoU in the presence of Government, workers, employers, and the media. This was a landmark occasion as it is expected to contribute to strengthening the Malawi National Dialogue structure ((TLAC). Indeed, this agreement is an addition to the already existing tripartite social dialogue where the government is also represented through the Ministry of Labour.
