Regional Commissiners’ Youth Employment Forum in Tanzania
The Ministry of Labour and Employment (MOLE) in collaboration with the International Labour Organization (ILO) are organizing a two day Regional Commissioners’ Youth Employment Forum.

The annual youth employment forum is being organized to provide an opportunity for employment sector stakeholders to reflect on the prevailing key labour market issues in Tanzania, opportunities and challenges, and jointly define common strategies to address pertinent challenges affecting development of the labour market in the country.
The two days Regional Commissioners forum (19 – 20 November 2014) is aimed at providing an opportunity to discuss and reflect on local level options for addressing the youth unemployment challenge in the country and the labour market challenges. The forum will provide a platform for the decision makers to discuss and come out with implementable solutions to address youth unemployment at their respective locations.
Organized by the ILO in collaboration with the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Tanzania, the forum will be attended by Regional Commissioners from Mainland Tanzania, Senior Government Officials, youth organizations’ representatives, social partners and other stakeholders.
The event is a follow up to a previous similar forum held in December 2013 in Dar es Salaam with the theme “Youth Employment: Time for Action”. The forum established that, despite youth employment being mainstreamed as one of the key priorities in most of current macro policies programmes and strategies such as Development Vision 2025, MKUKUTA, FYDP, BRN, more efforts are needed to ensure that issue has featured out clearly in local level development plans. The forum will therefore bridge the gap between the central and local levels as well as facilitating formulation of home grown solutions for youth unemployment.
The unemployment challenge facing Tanzanian youth is critical, calling for urgent attention by the government and stakeholders to implement interventions initiated locally. According to 2012 national population and housing census, the Tanzanian Labour force (ages 15 – 64) is 23,466,616 which is equivalent to 52.2% of the total population; and the youth (ages 15 – 35) is 15,587,621 (equivalent to 66.4% of the labour force). Unemployment is very high among the youth as compared to other age categories at 13.4% (males 12.3 % and females 14.3%) with urban youth suffering the most at 26.7% and rural youth at 7.9%.
