The conference presented the results of the first phase of the Labour-INT project and set the scene for a successful second phase.

Lieve Verboven, Director of ILO-Brussels, reiterated ILO’s support to the project, and underlined the importance of involving the social partners and promoting the ratification of the relevant ILO Conventions.

During the first phase, positive results were achieved in Belgium, where 53 asylum seekers were trained to pass the test for entering the catering sector; in Germany, where 13 workers representatives were trained to prepare the workplace for a better integration of asylum seekers and refugees; and in Italy (Milan), where 31 out of 40 asylum seekers were trained and found a job in the ICT and mechanical sector.

The second phase of the project includes three new pilot actions. In Austria, the project will focus on trainings and skills recognition of third-country nationals, in Greece, the digital skills of 100 asylum seekers and refugees will be developed, while in Italy (Naples), trainings related to the agricultural sector will be provided.

“The ILO stands ready to support the second phase of Labour-INT project,” said Ms Verboven. She underlined the need to change the narrative, highlighting the positive impact asylum-seekers and refugees can have on host societies. In addition, she reflected on how the ratification of relevant ILO Conventions (C97 on Migration for Employment and C143 on Migrant Workers) could contribute to a more favourable normative environment.

“The project shows the added value of the multi-stakeholder approach in integrating asylum-seekers and refugees into the labour market,” she concluded.
