Private Sector and Government launches Zambia Green Building Association
On February 26, more than 50 representatives from the private sector, government and academia gathered at the New Government Complex in Lusaka to discuss the establishing of a Zambia Green Building Association (ZGBA). The workshop was initiated by the National Council for Construction (NCC), the National Association of Medium and Small Scale Contractors (NAMSSC), and the Association of Building & Civil Engineering Contractors (ABCEC), in partnership with the Zambia Green Jobs Programme. Once operational, the ZGBA will play an important role in ”greening” the property and construction industry and providing new decent job opportunities for Zambians.

“Defining the mandate and objective of the Zambia Green Building Association” was the main topic of a one day consultative conference initiated by the National Council for Construction (NCC), the National Association of Medium and Small Scale Contractors (NAMSSC), and the Association of Building & Civil Engineering Contractors (ABCEC), in partnership with the Zambia Green Jobs Programme.
Government institutions and agencies, property developers, financial service providers, contractors, architects and other property industry stakeholders exchanged ideas on how to promote and drive forward the sustainable transformation of the Zambian property and building construction industry. Representatives from Namibia, South Africa and Kenya were present to share their experiences and knowledge on establishing Green Building Associations. Media frequented the event as well, with more than 30 journalists present.
During the event, Hon. Dep. Minister Mutaba Mwali on behalf of Hon. Mukanga, Minister of Transport, Works, Supply and Communications, stated in his official speech that there is need for the country to reduce dependence on imported materials and services and work towards localising value and supply chains. Mr Mukanga underlined that Zambia needs to strengthen the building construction industry as it will continue to contribute to job creation and enterprise development.
According to the Deputy Minister, green buildings will contribute to a more sustainable approach in terms of alternative materials used and water and energy-saving technologies applied in building construction including waste management and sanitation. “Green buildings will ensure a better quality of living for the Zambian population, combining functionality with equality”.
The Zambia Green Building Association will be established as an independent, non-profit, member-based organisation. It will serve as a platform for the whole of the property and building industry to collectively create a community that champions the sustainable transformation of the built environment in Zambia.
The Zambia Green Building Association will be active in issues related to green building governance, education and technical training, advocacy, awareness raising and green certification that provide means for organisations and buildings to be publically recognised as being green.
