Private employment agencies ready to deliver better services to migrant domestic workers

ADDIS ABABA (ILO News) – A validation Workshop of the Code of Conduct of the Ethiopian Private Employment Agencies Association was conducted on June 16-17, 2016, Addis Ababa.
A two-day validation workshop to review and improve the code of conduct of the Ethiopian Private Employment Agencies Association as per the newly revised Overseas Employment Proclamation was successfully completed on the 24th of June, 2016. More than 100 members of the association attended the workshop, which was organized by the ILO in partnership with the Ethiopian Private Employment Agencies Association.
Following the mass deportation of Ethiopians migrants from Saudi Arabia in October 2013, Ethiopia temporarily banned migration of domestic workers to the Middle East. During this period the government has worked tirelessly to improve the governance of labour migration in Ethiopia by putting structure in place and taking different measures such as the revised Overseas Employment Proclamation 923/2016.
In anticipation of resuming work once the ban is lifted, the Private Employment Agencies Association (PEA) which is charged with the responsibility of protecting the rights, safety and dignity of Ethiopians employed abroad came together to validate their code of conduct inline with the newly revised Overseas Employment Proclamation. During the workshop the association members were sensitized on the new revised proclamation and also what their roles and responsibilities are under the revised proclamation. In addition, the Association code of conduct were reviewed and revised in accordance with the proclamation.
At the end of the workshop, the participants expressed their renewed commitment to continue to work towards providing legal and safe labour migration services. They also expressed their hope that the ban will be lifted soon and that in the mean time they would work to improve the perception in the public about the benefits and importance of legal employment agencies towards fair and safe migration.
