Philippine employers trained on sustainability in 2025 learning series

Manila, Philippines (ILO News) – The Employers Confederation of the Philippines (ECOP) is working closely with ILO Bureau for Employers' Activities (ACT/EMP) in developing an Environmental, social and governance (ESG) programme for Philippine companies. The product suite includes ESG training for companies, risk assessment tools and carbon calculator tools to help companies comply with emissions legislation. To this end a training, company visits and strategic meetings with key sectors was held in Manila the last week of February.

The training was the third of ECOP’ s ESG learning series and national and international speakers were invited to brief Philippine companies on the latest ESG trends and developments. In particular, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) provided an update on changes to sustainability reporting requirements which will become mandatory (instead of comply-or-explain) for listed companies from 2028.

A session specifically for the mining sector outlined some of the challenges in the sector and how ECOP could support the sector. The Philippines is the fifth-most mineralized country in the world, with an estimated USD 1 trillion in untapped reserves of copper, gold, nickel, zinc and silver. There was a significant discussion on how ECOP could provide policy support to the sector. The Mining sector has both issues with the current pipeline of critical skills and more broadly attracting skilled professionals. Additionally, young people are often not aware of the opportunities in the sector. Young women in particular.

ECOP and ACT/EMP also participated in a special meeting of the National Tripartite Industrial Peace Council with visiting ILO Assistant Director General, Manuela Tomei.
