Pak Pang Royal Project Celebrations in Nakhon Si Thammarat Highlight this year Provincial Work Against Child Labour

Opening ceremony

This year through a partnership between ILO-IPEC and the Provincial Government of Nakhon si Thammarat and the district of Pak Panang the issue of child labour took also the center stage.

During the events opening ceremony organized on 4th of July 2013 the Governor of Nakhon si Thammarat Mr Wirot Jiwarangsun presided a certificate giving ceremony to a group of primary school children who had participated in a District essay writing and slogan making competition on the theme of Child Labour in Nakhon si Thammarat.

Mr Tuomo Poutiainen, ILO-IPEC Project Manager in Thailand thanked the Governor for highlighting the issue of child labour and spoke of the need for local Government and communities together to work towards addressing child labour and providing youth with the proper means to education and decent work. Governor Wirot Jiwarangsun asked everyone present to work together for a better future of Thai and migrant children in the Province and said that while lot has been achieved, more needs to be done to so that the Province can effectively tackle this problem.

The District wide school based essay writing competition was organized under the tutelage of the Child Labour Operating Committee of Pak Panang District and Planned Parenthood Association of Thailand (PPAT) both active ILO-IPEC Project partners engaged in community monitoring, education and livelihoods projects to address child labour in Pak Panang. The competition was inspired and organized in the spirit of the 2013 World Day Against Child Labour.

Slogan and writing contest winners

The celebration of the winners at the country fair which is widely participated by local community members, children from the nearby schools, market goers and exhibitors of agricultural products by farmers and producers associations. The essays and slogans presented the ills of child labour and the value of education through the eyes of the children living in rural agricultural and fishing communities thus making the fair an opportune place to raise awareness among the event goers.
