Over 1,000 runners enjoy first Qatar ‘Workers Fun Run’
Migrant workers enjoy unique event promoting togetherness and good health

The first ever Qatar ‘Workers Fun Run’ has brought together over 1,000 runners in a unique event promoting togetherness and good health.
Organized by the Ministry of Administrative Development, Labour and Social Affairs (ADLSA), the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands the 5 km run took place on 26 April 2019 in Doha’s Aspire Park.
Runners came from a wide range of sectors including construction, transport, manufacturing, hospitality and services with women runners making up approximately 25 percent of the field.
“This event recognizes workers and their great contribution to the development of modern-day Qatar. We plan for it to become an annual event of recognition,” said Mohammed Hassan Al Obaidly, Assistant Undersecretary for Labour Affairs in the Ministry.
Meanwhile Bahia Tahzib-Lie, Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to Qatar highlighted the importance of engaging with workers in social events.
“The Workers Fun Run encourages people from all backgrounds and walks of life to come together and celebrate the importance of unity and diversity,” she said.
The event also helped raise awareness of the ongoing labour reforms in the State of Qatar.
“Qatar and the ILO are working closely together to implement an ambitious labour reform agenda. The run provides the ideal opportunity to celebrate the positive changes that have taken place so far. It also marks the one-year anniversary of the opening of the ILO Project Office in Qatar,” said Houtan Homayounpour, Head of the ILO Project Office in Qatar.
