BANGKOK, Thailand (ILO News) – Thousands of Thai job seekers took the opportunity to overcome COVID-19 restrictions and land a job at an innovative online job fair held recently.
The International Labour Organization (ILO), through the Young Futuremakers Thailand project, supported by the Standard Chartered Foundation, collaborated with the Department of Employment of the Ministry of Labour to conduct the online fair on 13-14 August 2021 for jobs in Rayong province.
The event offered 3,681 job vacancies and provided a platform for 46 employers and 2,052 job seekers to engage, including youth.
Opened by Minister of Labour, Mr Suchart Chomklin, the fair leveraged the government's Smart Job Center website in combination with the Line application to provide jobseekers and employers a platform to post job vacancies and apply for jobs before the job fair and interact throughout the process. Jobseekers and employers were invited virtually during the event to take part in interviews.
Mr Graeme Buckley, Director of the ILO Country Office for Thailand, Cambodia and Lao PDR, highlighted the importance of the online job fair, stating, "Supporting youth in the labour market in Thailand through innovative approaches such as the online job fair in Rayong in collaboration between the DOE and the ILO's Young Futuremakers project is key for a human-centred recovery."
As part of the event, the ILO Young Futuremakers project and the Rayong Provincial Employment Office, with UNICEF’s support on youth engagement, hosted online information sessions on social media to provide practical advice on job interview preparations, employment opportunities and skills as well as inclusion issues beneficial to jobseekers in a changing world of work.
“As the impact of the COVID-19 crisis continues to disrupt economies and labour markets, innovative steps to connect job seekers to available labour market opportunities, including through digital technology, are needed. The online job fair has supported businesses and job seekers as they seek to overcome the challenges of COVID-19 and we hope to build on this experience in the future,” said Kawita Niwatananun, National Project Coordinator of the Young Futuremakers Thailand initiative.
