Nearly 240 HIV-positive logged in Tajikistan in first quarter of 2012
Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan, is hosting a meeting on the prevention of HIV infection among intravenous drug users in Central Asian countries.

According to a press release by the World Health Organization, this is the first consultation in Central Asia, which considers relationship between intravenous drug use and HIV infection from the position of various sectors.
There are about 190,000 intravenous drug users in Central Asia; the number of HIV-infected people has increased 14-fold in the region since 2000.
We recall that 238 HIV-positive, 157 of whom are men and 81 women, were revealed in Tajikistan in the first quarter of 2012. In all, 4,084 HIV positive people have been logged in the country since 1991, when the first case was revealed, to 1 April 2012. There are 3,144 men and 940 women among those HIV-positive people.
The bulk of HIV-positive, as before, consists of intravenous drug users - 52 per cent, and 30.2 p! er cent were infected through sexual intercourse. Only 8.9 per cent of the HIV-positive are labour migrants who have been infected through sexual intercourse or intravenous drug use.
