The National Workshop on the Effective Governance of Labour Migration in Tajikistan – Migration and Development took place in Dushanbe
The workshop was organized by the International Labour Organization within the framework of “Towards Sustainable Partnerships for the Effective Governance of Labour Migration in the Russian Federation, the Caucasus and Central Asia” project funded by the European Union.

Mr. Nilim Baruah, ILO Chief Technical Advisor, Mr. Alisher Yarbabayev, head of Department for Social Protection, Employment and Migration of the President Office of the Republic of Tajikistan, Mr. Subkhon Ashurov, Deputy Minister of Labour and Social Protection, Mr. Azizbek Sharipov, chairman of employers' organization and Mr. Bakhtier Abdulloev, deputy chairman of the Federation of Independent Trade Union of Tajikistan opened the workshop attended by state officials, researchers, academicians, experts of international organizations and embassies.
The aim of the workshop was to present a draft of the study Migration and Development in Tajikistan commissioned by the ILO and prepared by international and national experts, as well as to share international experience in migration and development. The study looked at skilled migration, return migration and diaspora initiatives in Tajikistan and offered recommendations and policies aimed at enhancing the positive impact of migration in Tajikistan.
The total labour migration from Tajikistan is estimated between 500,000 to 800,000 persons, about 10% of the 6.9 million population. The Tajiks seasonally migrate to Russia and make an enormous contribution to the economies of host and origin countries.
The participants of the workshop had an opportunity to provide their feedback and recommendations to the draft study. The study along with the recommendations will be forwarded to the Government of Tajikistan.
