Namibia ratifies the ILO Workers with Family Responsibilities Convention, 1981 (No.156)

GENEVA (ILO News) – On 14 August 2025, Namibia deposited the instrument of ratification of the Workers with Family Responsibilities Convention, 1981 (No. 156), with the Director-General of the ILO, Mr Gilbert F. Houngbo.

At the ratification ceremony held at the ILO headquarters, H.E. Ms Julia Imene-Chanduru, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Republic of Namibia stated: “Today marks an important milestone for Namibia as we take a vital step by depositing the instrument of ratification for ILO Convention No. 156 of 1981 on Workers with Family Responsibilities. This decision highlights Namibia's strong dedication to building an inclusive society, ensuring that both men and women are given equal opportunities to participate in the labour market, especially those who care for their families.”

Mr Gilbert Houngbo declared: “Convention No. 156 is a pivotal instrument for advancing equality of opportunity and treatment in employment, particularly by recognizing the challenges posed by family responsibilities. Its significance lies in the obligation for ratifying states to ensure that workers with family responsibilities are not subject to discrimination in accessing employment, training, or career progression. By adopting this convention, Namibia commits to implementing policies that promote the sharing of family duties, fostering a more inclusive and equitable workplace. This is particularly important for enhancing work-life balance, allowing more individuals, especially women, to engage fully in the labour market without having to compromise their family responsibilities.”
