Morocco to host an ILO South-South Cooperation and Decent Work Workshop in Africa

ABIDJAN/CASABLANCA (ILO NEWS) - The International Labour Organization (ILO) will host a two-day tripartite validation workshop on South-South Cooperation for Decent Work in Africa, in Casablanca, Morocco from 11-12 May 2017.

The objective of this regional tripartite workshop is to set the tone of South-South Cooperation in Africa through a thorough review and validation of the paper “South-South Cooperation: Africa’s Role and Contribution – a Framework for ILO Engagement”.

The meeting will bring together representatives from Governments, employers’ and workers’ organizations from eleven countries across the Africa region, along with other regional institutions and social partners.

The agenda of the tripartite workshop will include key topics including:

• South-South Cooperation and sustainable development
• South-South Cooperation in the Africa region – An ILO framework
• Modalities of South-South Cooperation
• Social protection floors: A South-South perspective
• Climate change and job creation: South-South and triangular cooperation
• Capacity building through South-South cooperation

The ILO Regional Office for Africa (ROAF) and the ILO Emerging and Special Partnerships Unit are engaging all major stakeholders for a key validation process of this initiative to efficiently shape the way forward for ILO’s framework of support to South-South Cooperation in the Africa region.

The Framework document provides an overview of the status, modalities and actors of South-South and triangular cooperation in Africa, and of the role and responsibilities of African institutions, the UN and the ILO in fostering South-South Cooperation in the continent.

The workshop will showcase successful Southern solutions to the multifaceted challenges facing the Africa today by demonstrating the growing evidence of the strong contributions of African countries in development cooperation in the region.
