Month of Women Entrepreneurs 2014 event will be officially launched on Tuesday 28 October 2014 by H.E. Dr. Mohamed Ghalib Bilal, Vice President of the United Republic of Tanzania, will involve more than 300 women entrepreneurs from Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar as well as from neighboring countries of Uganda and Kenya who will exhibit various products including – textiles, leather goods, medicinal and fruit products, detergents, woven materials and many more.

The 2014 Month of Women Entrepreneurs (MOWE 2014) was officially launched at Mnazi Mmoja Grounds in Dar es Salaam to support the call by the government, private sector, the UN and the public of Tanzania to promote entrepreneurship among young women in the country. The one-week event (October 27 to November 02, 2014) is aimed at promoting the ILO Decent Work Agenda, women entrepreneurs activities and entrepreneurship as a source of employment to men and women including the young people of Tanzania. Organized by the Month of Women Entrepreneurs Committee in collaboration with the International Labour Organization’s Women Entrepreneurship Development and Economic Empowerment Project (ILO-WEDEE), the event is expected to attract about 300 women entrepreneurs who will exhibit various products including – textiles, leather goods, medicinal and fruit products, detergents, and woven materials.
Why MOWE
The Month of Women Entrepreneurs is aimed at widely promoting the roles played by women entrepreneurs in job creation, increasing household (livelihood) income capacity as well as their contribution to the enterprise development, economic growth and socio economic development in Tanzania.
Since 2006 the MOWE, as an annual event, brought together more than 1,000 women entrepreneurs from all over the country and from the neighboring countries including Malawi to participate to the various entrepreneurship and business management forums in order to build their capacity to improve and expand their enterprises. Moreover the events provide a platform for women to network, exhibit and market their products. Increasingly MOWE has brought visibility of various talents, skills, products services, enterprises and market opportunities to women entrepreneurs of Tanzania.
The Organizers
The MOWE 2014 is being organized by the Month of Women Entrepreneurs Committee in collaboration with the ILO. Supported by the ILO through the Women Entrepreneurship and Economic Empowerment Project, MOWE was formed with the aim of promoting women entrepreneurs and entrepreneurship development in Tanzania. The MOWE committee includes members from ILO, WAMA Foundation, and Women Entrepreneurs Associations (TAFOPA, HOT, TANCRAFT, TWCC, CISO). Other organizations include TECO, TWB, TAWLAE, SHIVIWATA, TNWY, SIDO, Employers and workers organizations. Among the ministries involved include, Ministry of Labor and Employment, Ministry of Community Development Gender and Children, and the Ministry of Industry and Trade.
MOWE 2014 Activities: This year MOWE events will include the following:
1. Labour Law Sensitization for Women Entrepreneurs:
A workshop will be organized on 5 November 2014, to sensitize women in the MSMEs on labor laws. The workshop is part of implementation of recommendations from a WED Assessment survey which indicated poor or inadequate knowledge of labour laws among women in MSMEs. The workshop is also meant to promote and strengthen the capacity of MSMEs to be able to comply with the national labour laws. Compliance with labour laws will in turn promote good industrial relations which will automatically result into improved productivity in the MSMEs. This will also improve the working conditions of workers within the enterprises thereby reduce the decent work deficit.
2. Launch WED Assessment Report/WED Assessment National Plan of Action: The launch, set for 6 November 2014, is meant to disseminate findings from the WED Assessment study carried by the WEDEE project. The dissemination is also part of sensitization and mobilization of stakeholders support towards promoting conducive environment for women SMEs.
3. Exhibitions and Trade fairs: 27 October – Nov 02 November 2014, at Mnazi Mmoja grounds, Dar es Salaam
Media campaigns will be held during the whole period of the event to promote women entrepreneurs, mobilize participation of various stakeholders especially young women entrepreneurs as well as raising awareness to the public on the role of women in socio-economic development. This will also be an opportunity to promote the role of women entrepreneurs, lobby and advocate for a conducive environment for Women's Entrepreneurship Development (WED) among others.
Who can participate in MOWE?
Individuals and organizations can participate as corporate sponsors and or participants to the exhibitions and the other events. Benefits from participating to MOWE events include improved visibility through use of media outlets, networking and learning from experienced businesses and entrepreneurs across sectors, marketing and selling of products and services.
The MOWE organizing Committee invite all stakeholders, financial Institutions and other business service providers to register for their participation and join the initiative to support Women Entrepreneurs in Tanzania to explore their potential to start and grow sustainable businesses.

- Financial fair to provide women with an opportunity to interact, get firsthand information on available financial products services for the entrepreneurs. Financial institutions/banks to be involved include CRDB, NMB, TWB, Dar Es Salaam Commercial Bank and the VODA Com M-POWER program
- Tigo Milcom will show case and provide entrepreneurship ELearning to women entrepreneurs
- Business Development Service clinics: Will provide women entrepreneurs with non-financial business clinics. WEDEE will invite participation of Kazi Nje Nje entrepreneurs and WED trainers to provide business clinics to women entrepreneurs. The clinics will focus on marketing, business planning and financial literacy and management
- Symposium: Organized to provide women entrepreneurs with relevant information on business development, business procedures such as business formalization (registration and licensing), issues of weights and measures and procedures for acquiring barcodes and product standard certificates. These services will be provided by the responsible government agencies such as GS1, BRELLA, TWMA, TBS, TDFA and SIDO
- Visits to Fistula patients to encourage them to engage in entrepreneurship to improve their household income and contribute to the national economy.
- VCT for HIV/AIDS and other Reproductive health services to be provided by AMREF, the services will be provided to all participating women and guests. More focus will be given to the young people as the most risky group.
