Minister says 4,500 HIV-positives logged in Tajikistan

The number of HIV infected people in Tajikistan was 4,500 by the end of 2012, Health Minister Nusratullo Salimov told a news conference today.
He said that the logging of HIV cases had started in 1991. "Of the 4,500 HIV-positives, 268 people have died. A total of 752,700 people or about 10 per cent of the population of the country have undergone HIV tests," Salimov said.
Five years ago most HIV cases were logged among intravenous drug addicts, but now the number of people who contracted the HIV virus through sexual intercourse has increased, the minister said.
The Health Ministry also reported that the number of HIV-infected children is 275. About 97 of them contracted the virus from their mothers.
