MINISTER SARIEROĞLU CONGRATULATES ILO’S ANNIVERSARY OF FOUNDING

ANKARA – Ms. Jülide Sarıeroğlu, Turkish Minister of Labour and Social Security, congratulated the founding anniversary of the International Labour Organization (ILO).

Minister Sarıeroğlu said, in her letter to Mr. Numan Özcan, Director for the ILO Office for Turkey, “Mr. Director, I cordially congratulate the 99th anniversary of ILO.”

Reminding that Turkey has been a member since 1932 to ILO which was founded in 1919, immediately after the World War I, Minister Sarıeroğlu emphasised that Turkey always highly regarded and prioritised cooperation with ILO.

Minister Sarıeroğlu expressed in her letter that “I congratulate the founding anniversary of ILO which carries out all its activities on the basis of its unique tripartite structure composed of the representatives of workers, employers and governments, and which on this account is distinguished among other international organisations; and I wish you all the best in your work.”

About ILO

The International Labour Organisation (ILO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations for the world of work. It sets international labour standards, promotes rights at work, encourages decent employment opportunities, the enhancement of social protection and the strengthening of dialogue on work-related issues.

The ILO was founded in 1919 as part of the Treaty of Versailles at the end of the World War I, and became the first specialized agency of the United Nations in 1946. It has a unique structure, bringing together governments, employers’ and workers’ representatives. The ILO has its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland and has 186 Member States.

ILO Office for Turkey

The first ILO Office in Turkey was opened in İstanbul in 1952 as the “Manpower Field Office for the Near and Middle East.” In 1976, the “ILO Ankara Office” was opened. The Office continues its functions as the “ILO Office for Turkey”, located in Ankara.

The ILO Office for Turkey works to have a strong, visible, and proactive presence in Turkey by effectively engaging with the government, employers’ and workers’ organizations, and other international organizations to promote decent work for all, ensuring that the core ILO priorities, standards, interests, policies are promoted, and its experience is disseminated.

The ILO Office in Turkey functions as the diplomatic representation of the ILO in Turkey vis-à-vis the government, social partners, stakeholders, international community and the general public; works to promote International Labour Standards in Turkey, and develops, implements and monitors technical cooperation programmes and projects for advancing the decent work opportunities for all. ILO Ankara’s recent projects concentrate on issues of close interest to the world of work such as child labour, women’s employment, occupational safety and health, and Syrian migrants.
