Minister Mc Leod to open ILO regional seminar for judges, lawyers and legal educators
Seminar is expected to equip law professionals with the knowledge that will enable them to use international law sources at the national level

Port of Spain (ILO News) - Industrial court judges, magistrates, lawyers and legal educators from 13 Caribbean countries will meet from 9-13 July 2012 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, Trinidad and Tobago for the International Labour Organization (ILO) Seminar on International Labour Standards. The Hon. Errol Mc Leod, Minister of Labour and Small and Micro Enterprise Development, will deliver the feature address at the Opening Ceremony on 9 July 2012.
Other speakers at the Opening Ceremony will include Her Honour Deborah Felix-Thomas, President, Industrial Court of Trinidad and Tobago; His Honour Dennis Byron, President of the Caribbean Court of Justice; Dr. Cleopatra Doumbia-Henry, Director, International Labour Standards Department, ILO, Geneva; and Dr. Giovanni di Cola, Officer-in-Charge, ILO Decent Work Team and Office for the Caribbean.
The Seminar is being hosted by the ILO’s International Training Centre in collaboration with the International Labour Standards Department, ILO, Geneva and the ILO Decent Work Team and Office for the Caribbean. The main objective of the seminar is to equip law professionals with the knowledge that will enable them to use international law sources at the national level.
International labour standards adopted by the ILO are important tools not only for the development of national legislation but also for strengthening domestic case law on labour matters. The seminar will cover the international labour standards system, including international labour standards on freedom of association, the right to collective bargaining, equality in employment and occupation, and termination of employment, as well as the work of ILO’s supervisory bodies and its relevance to national judges and lawyers.
Participants include judges and other law professionals from the Industrial Courts of Antigua and Barbuda, and Trinidad and Tobago; the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court, Industrial Tribunals of the Bahamas, Dominica and Jamaica; the Supreme Court of Belize; the Norman Manley Law School, Jamaica, and the Eugene Dupuch Law School, Bahamas.
Course facilitators are Denys Barrow, Member of the ILO Committee of Experts on the Application of Conventions and Recommendations; Professor Jefferson Cumberbatch, University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus; Dr. Cleopatra Doumbia-Henry, ILO, Geneva; Tzehainesh Tekle, Senior Programme Officer, ILO’s International Training Centre; and Pierre-Francois Recoing, International Labour Standards Specialist, based at the ILO Office for the Caribbean.
