Meetings in Tashkent
Discussions were held in Tashkent on 14th of November between the Minister of Employment and Labour Relations of Uzbekistan, Aktam Khaitov, and ILO Senior International Labour Standards and Labour Law Specialist, Lejo Sibbel.

Discussions focused on Uzbekistan’s plan for further ratifications of ILO Conventions and modalities of ILO support to the process. On the same day Lejo Sibbel met with senior management of the Federation of Trade Unions and the Chamber of Commerce and Industries of Uzbekistan. The meetings were conducted as part of the ILO support to the implementation of the Decent Work Country Programme of Uzbekistan and its national strategy to apply international and national labour standards.
The productive discussions concluded with a mutual understanding on activities to be undertaken in support of Uzbekistan’s ratification of 10 ILO Conventions, as prioritised by the Government. The ILO will support the process by providing an analysis of the current legislative framework against relevant international labour standards and polices set by the Government. In addition, a common understanding was reached on activities to be undertaken in the near future to strengthen Social Dialogue. In this respect, it was agreed that the ILO would undertake a comprehensive review of the current social dialogue framework and practices at national, sectoral and enterprise level.
On the following day the Project of Support to the Decent Work Country Programme of Uzbekistan funded by the United States Department of Labour organized a seminar attended by ILO’s Tripartite Constituents, civil society and academia representatives. The seminar provided participants with the opportunity to discuss the results and recommendations of a review of child and forced labour legislation conducted under the project, as well as to gain a better understanding of the contents of selected ILO Conventions identified for ratification by Uzbekistan.
