Massive – Open – Online: A new form of learning and connecting for trade unionists

31 March 2016

The Bureau for Workers’ Activities (ACTRAV) in cooperation with the Global Labour University has launched the second round of its “Massive Open Online Course” (MOOC) on Workers’ Rights in a Global Economy. Over 2300 participants from over 60 countries are participating in the course which is offered in a cost free and in a certificate version.

The MOOC helps connect union members and labour activists on an interactive platform to learn and to exchange about the challenges and strategies for implementing International Labour Standards worldwide. Most of the participants are trade unionists, labour and human rights activists, researchers, labour lawyers and development professionals.

“Global challenges requires global responses. This MOOC is one tool for trade unionists to learn how to use international labour standards s in their labour struggles and to connect with other union activists to extend cooperation and solidarity”, said Maria-Helena André, Director of ACTRAV.

The online discussions among participants are substantial and touch on a wide range of issues including the implementation of ILS and the ILO supervisory system, social inequality, and strategies of trade union organizing.

In addition to the online course, local MOOC workshops will be organized: in 12 countries there will be local MOOC workshops on relevant international or national labour issues. Results and outcomes of these workshops as well as the follow up proposed actions will be uploaded later on after the course finishes.

As it is self-paced learning, the course is still open for enrolment although it has already started: click here for enrolment. The course will run until 12th of May 2016.
